Teeth Brushing in Henderson, NV

June - Hygienist

Okay. I want to go over brushing and why you should brush all areas, but divide them into two areas.

How should I brush my teeth and gumline?

When you brush, you don't want to brush in circles and try to brush the teeth and gums at the same time. Always brush the teeth and the gingival margin first, then the gum tissue above. This is where your bone is. The gum is covering the bone that holds your teeth in the socket.

What is the proper toothbrushing technique?

The gum tissue needs oxygen. The bacteria that cause gum disease are anaerobic, which means they don't thrive in oxygen. You've got the tooth, you've got the gingival margin, and then you've got the tissue above and below called bound-down tissue.

When you brush, you always want to brush at 90 degrees to the tooth and 45 degrees to the gumline. Whether you're using an electric toothbrush or a manual toothbrush, it's the same technique. So, 90 degrees, 45 degrees, and then move on to the next two to three teeth. It's the same way on the bottom: 90 degrees to the tooth and 45 degrees to the gumline.

First, you want to do the insides and the surfaces. Once you've finished with the teeth, go up and do the bound-down tissue next. It's a brushing massage, and what that's doing is stimulating blood flow in that tissue. On the top, brush and massage the gum downward. On the bottom, brush and massage the gum upward. This also helps clear material from around the gumline and supports healthy gum tissue.
